Cary Smith (Hammer Nutrition( takes another 100 mile Win in Oregon While Sue Butler Rivercity Bicycles) Defends the Oregon Frontier in the womens open.

The real story and main photo of the real winner is here at Oregon Velo That crazy grouse

5:38 we started from a quiet and 39 degree start to find that the gentle road climb would turn into a test of focus and tire

choice as the Lava and sand and little ups and downs put even the toughest rider to his or her limits and ability.

The Womens race was a 60 mile slug fest with Sue Butler (Rivercity Bicycles) and Cheryl Sornson (Team CF) riding together for much of the day until the decisive Farewell Climb up and up and the cord broke and Butler pulled away for the Day. In third was local Bend Rider Serena Bishop (Sunnyside Sports) in a solid 3rd on her first National Podium with Kari Studley (Mafia Racing) in 4th

The Singlespeed Class came down to a Back and forth between NUE Series Leader and 2009 Champion Gerry Pflug ( Salsa/SPK Pro Bikes) and Dejay Birtch (Niner/Ergon/No Tubes) settling in as it came down to 2 minutes at the end as a 5 minute gap came down in the last 13 miles.

The Mens Battle started innocent enough with a group of 20 over the top and into the dirt for the 2 mile climb to Mt Bachelor. At 10 miles Chris Sheppard (Rocky Mtn Bikes) , Cary Smith (Hammer Nutrition), Josh Tostado (Bach Builders/Santa Cruz) and Jeff Schalk (Trek MTN Co-op) took a 1 minute lead over a host of others lead by Local guy Jeff Dengal (Sagebrush Cycles) in 5th. As the first loop punctured 2 of Tostado’s tires the battle at the front went on and on as Sheppard built a 2 minute lead at Edison Snow park for Aide #2. At 41 miles the race shifted as Sheppard missed a left turn and took a 3-4 mile diversion to find that his 3 minute lead was now a 7 minute deficit. As the day wore on the gap could be only closed to 5 minutes as Cary Smith Proved to have all the climbing and Technical Skills to take home his second Oregon Victory this Year. Rounding out the podium was Josh Tostado in 3rd, and Jeff Schalk in 4th.

Cary Smith (Hammer Nutrition) 1st Place

In the masters Race Randy Idding (Ragnarok Racing) took home the win from a tough John Solomito (Marks Baywood Bikes) in 2nd

Other stories will be told on the day that 75 degree temps and no smoke at all from the Sisters fire gave me a over 80% finisher rate, which is great and I appreciate all of you for coming and hope to see you in 2011.
